There is more than just grass in our fields PDF Print E-mail

Cows love grass and our fields are just full of different sorts of grass.

Amongst others:

Cocksfoot

Perennial rye-grass

Fescue

But if we look more closely we can also see lots of other plants.... so far we have counted more than 130 different sorts of plants (“species”) in our fields. Here are just four of them:

Common stork’s-bill (Erodium cicutarium)

Herb Bennet  (Geum urbanum)

Bugle (Ajuga repens)

Common mallow (Malva sylvestris)

Not all these plants are in all the fields and some only grow and flower at certains times of the year.

Wild daffodil (Narcissus pseudonarcissus)
(Spring)

Bee orchid (Ophrys apifera)
(may-june)

But there are some you can see at almost any time of the year, such as the daisy (Bellis perennis)

There are even some poisonous plants in our fields… but cows tend to avoid them!

Thorn apple
Datura stramonium

Black nightshade
Solanum nigrum

There are many hedges and spinneys around our fields, with trees, shrubs, undergrowth and brambles.

English oak
Quercus robur
Holm oak
Quercus ilex
Ash
Fraxinus angustifolia
Hazel
Corylus avellana
Sweet chestnut
Castanea sativa
Hawthorn
Crataegus monogyna
